BIOMECHANICS RESEARCH LAB

Welcome to the Biomechanics Research Laboratory. We have a range of expertise in the testing of biological materials and the latest in mechanical testing equipment. We have an Instron Universal Testing Machine (model 4443) which enables us to accurately test materials in compression, tension and bending. Test loads range from 0.1 - 1000 Newtons and we have a range of dedicated fixtures and fittings for the testing of biological materials. Previous work has used the machine to investigate how the process of retting in flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) and hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) can affect the work required to peel fibres from the stem and the mechanical behaviour of the stem and roots of cleavers (Galium aparine L.), an important agricultural weed.  Work has also investigated the mechanical behaviour of porcine long bones and and equine hoof keratin.  Current projects are investigating the mechanical properties of seeds and the biomechanics of plant-animal interactions.
