My Personal Webpages

please note :- The following is primarily intended as guidance for University staff, however most of the advice and instructions.given apply equally to student sites.

In order to maintain consistency across emerging areas of the University's web site, the Marketing department would like you to use this template for staff home pages (available as 'My Public Webpages' on the corporate desktop).  We recommend that you use MS Front Page to create your site.

Instructions for Front Page users:

  1. Read the entire page
  2. Immediately save this page as 'index.htm'. It will be your 'Home' page
  3. Plan your site first -
What pages do you need, title them?
What will the menu links and file names be?
  4. Add your links to the menu on the left hand side. Delete or add to existing samples.
  5. Add the content for your home page over this text and save.
  6. To preview, select the preview tab at the bottom of the page.
  7. Create more pages by adding content over the previous content, then save using the file names relevant to the links you have created.

You can open you files and edit them directly from your web folder or you can create a folder on your hard drive, edit there, then drag and drop to your web folder. The latter is better as you can preview before going live and you will have a backup. Always bear in mind that as soon as you copy a file to the web folder it is live on the internet!

The URL for your page will be: http://webpages.lincoln.ac.uk/username

Notes

Graphics

Please do not worry if the layout graphics do not appear - they are addressed to the main web server and should appear correctly when the page is published or previewed (Front Page users - preview tab at foot).

Always size images (use Photoshop or similar) before putting them into the page. NEVER re-size them on the page. Always optimise the image for web use. Do not include images above 40Kb in size as they will be slow to download and you will use up your server space allocation very quickly!.
